Summary

The thematic section of this issue, entitled Intimacies, brings together the work of Maude Arsenault, Judith Bellavance, and Nicole Jolicœur, who explore different forms of interiority through sensitive and engaged photographic practices. From identity and the female body in Arsenault’s work, to the memories left behind by those who have passed away in Bellavance’s, and the historical representations of psychiatry revisited by Jolicœur, their practices address childhood, grief, illness, and vulnerability, making the image a powerful act of resistance.

The issue also includes three essays that take a critical look at artistic practices and the issues shaping contemporary photography. The reflections explore, among other topics, eco-responsible practices in the fields of photography and printmaking in Quebec; the relationship between looking and consumption in the work of Martin Parr; and the exploitation of natural sites resulting from colonization in the work of Lucy Raven.

In an interview, Denis Rioux presents Espace DÈS_, a Montreal art gallery dedicated to photography and conceived as a space for creation, presentation, and exchange.

The issue also features a selection of recent exhibitions in Québec, Canada, and internationally, as well as three reviews of books devoted to photography.
